Chicken Math

How many of you have heard of “chicken math”?  This is a phenomenon that can occur even before you get any chickens at all and definitely happens after the arrival of the first fluffy butts!

Example:  A family moves to the country and decides to get chickens.  Six chickens seems like an ideal number to start with.  They build a lovely new chicken coop and run. The minimum order that can be shipped to the family is nine chicks…that’s only three more than originally planned. But will nine chicks supply enough eggs throughout winter for the family? Twelve, twelve chickens will provide enough eggs through winter, and that’s only three more (again). Family now has twelve adorable little babies in their spare bathroom and they will stay there for eight weeks. Family also has a brand new chicken coop and run just sitting outside looking all empty and sad…

Mister Family sees an ad for laying hens for sale! Missus Family can’t wait to be able to collect eggs!  So Mister and Missus Family load Daughter Family into the Jeep with two cat crates and head way, way out to the country and pick out four laying hens.

The new girls are put into their shiny new coop and left to relax and explore their new home.

As the evening grows near, Mister and Missus Family head out to check on the ladies. Upon stepping out of the back door they hear an odd yet familiar sound.  What is that sound you ask?  Crowing, as in cockadoodledoo.  Apparently Mister and Missus Family don’t know the difference between a Silkie Bantam Rooster and a Silkie Bantam Hen.  They do now.

This is a rooster, NOT a hen.

And this is how Mister and Missus family decided to get six hens and now have fifteen hens and a rooster.
