Future Us

So the wedding is over and things are getting back to what passes as normal when you’re in a constant state of renovation.  Toolbox in the hallway, stacks of books on the landing waiting for the polyurethane to dry on the shelves, paint scrapers and peeling paint all over the front porch, power saw on the wood stove…normal.  We’re no longer focused on the wedding so we’re looking and thinking and planning projects all over the place and using our favorite phrase, “future us”.  We first heard it on a show on the DIY network and we have adopted it for projects that we want to do but that aren’t high on the list of priorities, so here are some of our “future us” projects.

Chicken Coop

This is high on my list of priorities but alas painting the house before winter, installing the heat pump, and repointing the chimney must come before fresh eggs.  We’ll put it here with a small fenced in run but we’ll let them run free in the yard most days.  Robert continues to warn me about the inevitable attrition in hopes that I won’t get too attached to them…I’ll be fine I’m sure.

Raised Beds

Another project high on my list.  I have two now that look pitiful and lonely in a large yard but the goal is fifteen.  I’m fairly certain that I can make a dent in world hunger with fifteen of them based on the amount of zucchini and tomatoes those two lonely beds have produced this summer.

Garage

One of Robert’s requirements for buying a house was that it had a garage or at least a place to put one.  Here’s where the garage will eventually go.  Turns out garages are pretty pricey so I’m happy that my requirements were chickens and a garden!

Laundry Chute

I have a large laundry room that I really like, but it IS downstairs and we live upstairs, mostly, well we will eventually (see below for future kitchen).  Turns out Rachel’s bathroom is directly above the laundry room and there is a perfect spot to put in a laundry chute.  Genius.  She does insist on a lid of some sort because…cats.  I thought it would be funny when they decided to investigate  but she didn’t seem to think so.

Kitchen

We DO have a kitchen now, it is small, probably done in the eighties, and downstairs.  As I mentioned above we live upstairs so it makes for a lot of bellowing about dinner being ready and then the balancing act with plates, silverware, and drinks upstairs to the dining table.  Then there’s the conversation about forgetting the (fill in the blank) and whether or not it’s worth another trip downstairs to get it.  On the bright side we stay around the dinner table longer talking because no one is eager to make the trek downstairs again!

Flooring under the Wood Stove

I don’t know why this bothers me but it does.  The marble should be brick, nothing else in the building is marble so I feel like it’s out of place there.  Should be a simple fix right?

Larger Deck

This was recently added to our list as it is frequently very nice in the evenings and we find ourselves sitting on the steps of this very small deck.  We would like it to be about double the depth that it is now and go to the end of the house.  I’m thinking lounge chair so I can guard my chickens.

Tile Flooring

This is a VERY “future us” project, like it could actually be a “future Rachel” project.  We would love to find some reclaimed wood flooring and replace the tile with it.  I’m guessing that won’t be quite as simple as replacing the marble tile with brick but hey that’s the beauty of “future us”, I don’t have to think about it too much yet.

So there you have it, things that we want to do but that haven’t quite made it to the top of the list yet.  Some days I don’t think they’ll ever happen but then I realize that once the big ticket projects get done the smaller things will be a breeze…right?

Have you had chickens before? I have no idea why it took us so long to get them! They are fun:-) We also let ours free range anytime we are home.

Nope never had them but can’t wait. Ours will free range as well.
