The Dragon Run Country Store
A General Store built in 1913.
The motto was, “If it’s not at the store, it’s on its way from the dock.”
This store is just off of Highway 17 in the Middle Peninsula region of Virginia. It is close to Urbanna and Saluda, about an hour away from Historical Williamsburg.
The name is from the Dragon Run Watershed close to the property.
We are gathering as much information about the history of the store and the people that were involved in the building and running of it, as well as the customers that relied on it. Our history page will continue to grow as we discover more about the Dragon Run Country Store’s past.
Here is some history about us and how we got here.
One of the reasons we moved to Virginia over a year ago from Southern California was to find a place to live and love. Not your suburban, cookie-cutter, tract home but a unique old home with history. With our love for vintage, antiques and restoration, when we walked into this old store it was a no-brainer. This place was calling our name and saying “Psst. I have a lifelong project for you”. When we saw the work and detail put into this building, we fell in love.
We have spent many years in retail, either with our blown glass and ceramics stores, or our restaurants. We see things from a slightly different prospective than most. After we finish creating a comfortable living space upstairs we will turn our focus to the store area. The current idea is antiques. It has been sworn with blood that we will not have another restaurant. Our families love for antiques and history and our experience in retail will aid in that venture.
This web site is a way to help bring life to this place and to show the beauty we are discovering.
looking forward to reading all about it : )
Super excited for y’all
Loving it.
what an adventure!
I just LOVE this place and visited before it was for sale. I fantasized about owning it but as a single woman it didn’t work for me from a middle-of-nowhere or restoration standpoint. So happy it is in good hands and all the best with the restoration. If you will sell antiques, I will surely stop by on my way from D.C. to Virginia Beach on Route 17!
What did you end up doing with the elevator? was the pulley mechanism still in place?
The elevator is still all there. The ropes need to be replaced. Our plan is to raise it to the second floor and build a base underneath to leave it up there.
Wow looking forward to meeting you guys and becoming customers one day:) Tara
LOVE will keep you INSPIRED! Look forward to your GRAND OPENING!
